I came home in the middle of June to find scaffolding encasing my apartment. The management company had not warned any of us about the impending construction - no warning, no details, no time frame - nothing! I guess they must have been afraid that we would all move out. I for one would have seriously considered it! (NOTE: They did however see fit to post a notice about carpet cleaning in the hallways and installing "bird netting" on the roof - see picture link below.)
Unfortunately, I am housebound on medical leave with Fibromyalgia and Palindromic Rheumatism. These two maladies (plus others I won't even mention) make it difficult for me to escape my prison. As you will see, I cannot even sit on my balcony to get a breath of fresh air or cool off. As a matter of fact, I cannot even open my windows or blinds! Most of the time, the scaffolding is in the way, or work is in progress right near the windows and at night I cannot leave the windows open as the scaffolding is like a staircase to heaven for would-be thieves.
It has been so hot in my apartment that even sitting would result in breaking into a heavy sweat. And I cannot open my blinds (and are they ever dusty and filthy from all this construction) because 9 times out of ten, there are workmen standing right outside my window! No privacy here!
One of several memorable highlights through all this would be "sitting" in my bathroom and having workmen pass by the skylight and look in! They were finally kind enough to cover it up for me. Mind you, I requested to management that they have it covered for me - at least 5 times - and it never got done. My thanks to the construction crew for saving me from further embarassment!
As for noise, there is no way to describe what it's like to endure banging (the nails have come right through the walls and into my apartment!), sawing, drilling, and the flapping of the protective taupaulins in the breeze. I have had a headache since this began. At times it has been so loud that I could not even hear my own phone ringing! And after being up sick all night and finally falling asleep around 5 or 6am, I would be rudely awakened at 7:45am promptly with another day of banging to endure!
It is now September 14, 1998 (they've been here for THREE MONTHS!!), and I'm told they will be GONE in about two weeks! I live for that moment.
