THE SINNER
by Carolyn Zonailo

His crime is passion.
An acolyte of his own devotion,
he worships the image he creates.
There is the notion of himself
as fallen from grace,
a lonely outcast.
He can't reach out
to touch another living body.
Flesh that would respond
to his flesh
is repugnant to him.
Instead he touches
the glossy photograph
in a magazine
where the provocative body
lures his impeccable desire.
This passion for perfection
he nurtures in private,
in the secret mating
between desire and necessity.

SILENCE
by Carolyn Zonailo

I can imagine turning it in my hand.
I can imagine it having weight.

You long for it
I feel a prisoner of it.

You are afraid it will be broken.
I keep on breaking it.

Silence is what you discover
when you walk alone in the woods.

Your woods. I imagine
this silence might last forever.

BROKEN ROMANCE
author unknown

You told me your story, a picture in words.
A garden with roses and sweet-singing birds
and two lovers dreaming the moments away
bewitched by the spell of the blue summer's day.
A brief hour of magic and love's ecstasies
now locked in the casket of old memories.
The summer has ended, the roses have gone,
the lovers have parted, yet love lingers on.
The songs and the laughter have ended in tears,
as lonely, heartbroken, they face the long years.
A sad little story, who knows, my friend?
Your romance may still have a beautiful end.

FOREVER YOU
by Brian Cross

If the sky were no longer an azure blue
and the sun did not shine with its golden hue.

If the stars in the night sky twinkled no more
and gone was the wind that we all adore.

If flowers ceased to bloom in vibrant array
and the poets were left with nothing to say.

If the mountains crumbled no more to be seen
and the grasses all died ne'er again to be green.

If the paints of the artist were left to go dry
and the birds couldn't sing and forgot how to fly.

If all the worlds beauty faded and fell true
I would barely notice them passing from view,

for there would still be you.

FALLING IN LOVE WITH FRIENDS
by Carolyn Zonailo

Falling in love with friends a11 over again is tough
Makes it hard to look them in the eye when they're
talking about the cute new worker at the office or how
Sex is with their love. Then again it's not sex you want
It's recognition

Of how your heart jumps
when you see them doing something competent or stupid
When you see someone wearing shoes like theirs
When a cloud across the sun reminds you
of the way the sky scrapers were shadowed that evening
You walked to the movies down through
the red light district

Hookers are walking in your heart
their red boots flashing. You think it's just as well you
want respect and not sex. You remember
how your friend laughs. You replay innocent conversations.
the flesh pedlars are walking their beat. You don't know
if you're better than that or if you would
sell your heart for solitude to contemplate your passion.
